Evaluating Truth and Credibility (ETaC)

This three-day program is based on the solid research and science of Dr. Paul Ekman and is designed to develop a person’s ability and skill to recognise the emotions in others as a basis for evaluating truth and lies.

The program explains the psychological models of truth and lies, and the skills required to identify ‘Hotspots’ – moments when the strain between thoughts and feelings produce an observable leakage across the five channels of communication. This course is designed to help you read and evaluate the degree of credibility or truthfulness in what others are communicating.

Besides the training of the five channels, you will also learn about memory and learn how to work out if a statement is remembered or being constructed through scientific content analysis.

You will practice and refine the skills within a safe learning environment with a Paul Ekman International Approved Trainer.

Upon completion, a graded Certificate of Competence will be awarded to you.

Course Outline

You will be better able to interact with and elicit information from others, especially in high stake contexts. It will improve your capacity to evaluate the credibility of data received in the course of observations, conversations, interviews and investigations by:

  1. Enhancing your understanding of how to identify and interpret five channels of communication
  2. Improving your capacity to utilise active listening and observational skills.

At the end of the workshop you will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of baselines and when they occur
  • Take a structured approach to the detection of leakage
  • Identify and evaluate ‘hotspots’
  • Carry out hypothesis testing
  • Identify and evaluate clues to lying and truth telling
  • Adopt active listening and observation skills
  • Utilise these skills to evaluate truthfulness and credibility
